Do any of you guys in the HF industry know anything about Dragoneer / Investment Group of Santa Barbara (IGSB)? Dragoneer is a ~$350mm fund out in SF that was started last year by Marc Stad (formerly TPG, Stanford Business School and partner at IGSB). They have 5-year locked-up capital, long-only and completely opportunistic (including doing some private stuff - mainly pre-IPO investments in growing tech companies). Trying to get a sense for their reputation and name recognition in the industry (which is probably pretty low except maybe for people who know the SF bay area funds well - e.g. SPO).

Interview questions
I'm a junior undergraduate in the US. I have an interview on Tuesday for a summer analyst position at an endowment-style fund which came to recruit on campus. I honestly have no idea what kind of questions to expect for this because I never looked into HF recruiting at undergrad levels. Would you say the first round will be mostly fit or technicals? What kind of questions can I expect?
is David Tepper the best hedge fund manager alive today?
Now here's a name I rarely hear people on here mention.
40% gross returns over 15+ years, 30%+ net. A $1 invested back in the beginning is worth $140+ today.
Not sure of any other fund managers that come remotely close to that sort of net return over that long period of time (except Eddie Lampert, but his performance has tanked since taking over Sears in 2005+ I believe)
I also assume it's probably insanely hard to land a job at Appaloosa haha. He's a boss.
Bon Voyage SAC Capital
From bloomberg:
Billionaire Steven A. Cohen's SAC Capital Advisors LP, the hedge fund accused of fostering a culture of rampant insider trading, has agreed to plead guilty to securities fraud and wire fraud, pay a record $1.8 billion and shutter its investment advisory business.
The company, indicted earlier this year, was accused of operating a conspiracy stretching back to 1999, reaping hundreds of millions of dollars in illicit profit. Cohen, 57, wasn’t charged in the indictment of the Stamford, Connecticut-based firm. He still faces an administrative action filed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for his alleged failure to supervise the hedge fund’s activities.
Elliott Management
Anyone have a sense of types of questions they ask on the personality/aptitude test and case study test? Any color appreciated...
Levine Leichtman
Does anyone have further info about Levine Leichtman Capital Partners, ie culture, what to expect as an analyst, colleagues, comp, AUM in distressed credit etc?
Many thanks,

Interview with Volatility Fund
I got an interview request from nowhere for an Associate level position and I'm trying to prepare. I don't have access to the job posting anymore because it disappeared. It's a systematic/quant fund that makes money off of equity options and volatility futures.
Faux Pas? European HF Placement
Looking to do a spring placement at a well-known European hedge fund (Amundi, Brevan Howard, Man, etc.) but I'm having a bit of trouble getting through to people... I've done previous HF gigs, including one right now in Hong Kong - so this isn't just a completely random thing. I was wondering if there are any European monkeys out there who could give me some advice? How should I go about getting my foot in the door, or at least getting these guys on the phone?
I feel like I'm committing some sort of faux pas without knowing it...
Quick (hopefully) Excel question.
WSO lend me your excel genius! (Ace Ventura anyone?)
Ok so I am trying to create a formula that will rank data in an array and then spit out a value dependent on how well a company did relative to its peers. For example say you have ten companies and want to rank them based on yield. The highest yielding co. would be ranked #1, but I would want the formula to spit out a score, for simplicity make the score similar to GPA, so this #1 gets a 4, #2 a 3 etc. Issue is that I need a formula that I can adapt to evaluate the same list of companies on various metrics.
Here is what I have made that doesn't work, returns #VALUE! Silly mistake? Wrong way to go about it? Shitty explanation?
$40M AUM
What is the expected compensation for someone joining a firm with $40 AUM? What's the ball park?
The firm is seeking someone with 2-3 years of previous experience at a bank or some fund.
Macro vs. Value Investing
Want to hear your opinions on macro investing versus value investing, the two completely different strategies.

Qualifications of a Hedge Fund Manager
I wanted to know if someone were to start a hedge fund in the UK, what qualifications or accreditation would one need?
I wasn't to sure about this area.
Say you won a $2M lottery!
Say you won a $2 million lottery!
What would you do with that?
Hedge fund trading assistant
Bumped an old post but it wasn't in the most appropriate forum to begin with, so reposting here:

Anyone have more color on the trading assistant/junior trader role at a macro HF? Curious about what others' experiences have been like.
I'm considering a move in the opposite direction from the OP (BB trading to trading assistant at macro fund). I think it's a great opportunity if you are confident enough in your own abilities and are willing to hustle to make the role work for you (which I am).
Are these TA jobs usually advertised or gotten through connections? What kind of experience is required?
Sentiment Analysis in Global Macro
Sat down with a Macro PM at a global buyside firm (can't mention any names) and he told me how he places a boatload of weight on sentiment analysis to gauge pyschology. This guy and his group are running a pure discretionary fund in regards to idea generation and research so they're not using any fancy Machine Learning tools to help them quantify Sentiment.
Regardless,
Being the newb I am, what are some SIMPLE ways for one to gauge sentiment ?
top medium-sized hedge funds? (500M-2B in AUM)
Out of curiosity, I know CNBC and the world focus on all the biggest and most famous funds (Greenlight, Pershing, Baupost, ESL, etc.) but who here knows any medium sized ($500M-$2B) value-oriented/event-driven hedge funds in California and NYC that have performed really well over time?
You always hear that these are the guys that kill the market, %-age wise each year, but you never heard of who exactly they are on the media. After all, places like ESL scored 30% a year net returns over 15+ years when they were < $1-2B in size.
Are Hedge Fund Traders risk neutral?
I suppose this obviously depends on mandate, return requirements and trader psyche (what else?) but would you consider (some) hedge fund traders risk neutral, i.e., the next dollar they earn is always worth the same, call that one dollar, to them?
I guess, but I'm no expert on this topic yet by a long shot, they could be expected to earn, say, $30mm for the fund a given year and then be quite close to being risk neutral at first but then become increasingly risk averse once they passed their yearly mark - or not since they would be bonus focused, get rich quick and then retire kind of folks?
Why L/S hedge fund from venture capital?
Hi guys,
I'm currently a Sr. Associate at a late stage, technology-focused venture capital fund. I've done two years in technology banking and three years in technology investing. I'm interviewing at a technology-focused L/S hedge fund for an analyst role where I'll specifically cover software, consumer internet, and technology-enabled services. I'm having a lot of trouble articulating why I want to move from a VC fund to a HF. Any help? Here's what I like and dislike about my job:
Likes: sector focus, buyside, ability to see a lot of emerging trends in technology, how emotionally invested I am in deals I work on (it's pretty awesome)
